Compost Giveaway
AltRoot is now providing finished compost giveaway by donation only, to local area residents.
We are grateful for the opportunity to provide this organic resource service in Westlock County and it is our goal to show our appreciation by nurturing gardens and lawns in the local community in which we live and work.
- Charitable Donation Required
- Load At Your Own Risk
- Local Residents Only
- Report To Scale
Here is the info you need to know to pick up AltRoot compost at the WRWMC:
- For local area residents only – must show WRWMC card in order to get compost
- No “sales” to outside residents will be allowed, or if a card is not presented
- Residents must report to scale for any compost pick ups – if dropping garbage or recycling first, you must come back over the scale to get an empty weight and inform scalehouse staff of your compost pick up. Then report back to the scalehouse with the filled compost weight afterwards
- The “giveaway” is by charitable donation, no funds go to AltRoot. The organization that will be receiving the donation will posted at the scalehouse and may change periodically to assist different organizations in Westlock and area
- Compost is load at your own risk – bring a shovel as no equipment or shovels will be provided on site
- Compost pick up is limited to 500kgs (half a tonne) to each resident, for each year
- Screened, cured and clean compost for pick up is located at the WRWMC adjacent to the current resident compost drop off area, located SW of the scalehouse and recycle building
Recommended application rates:
- Gardens: can add 1/2″ to 2″ of compost around plants and water in right away
- For lawns: a light topdress of 1/4″ to 1/2″ goes a long way
- Use and apply as soon as possible – a shovel full of compost has trillions of microbial “livestock” that need shelter and food in a living ecosystem such as a garden or lawn. The microbes will not be healthy or happy sitting in a pile in the sun with no water for days on end, keep in mind.
